Three Haredim Arrested, Surrendered $2M. Judaica Objects
The Israeli Police has exposed today an international gang, specializing in breaking into European synagogues and stealing holy artifacts. A local court in Tel Aviv ordered the three-day imprisonment of Yerachmiel Hershler, 46, from Benei Berak, and the six-day jailing of Aharon Stephanski, 37, from Jerusalem, and Amnon Edri, 31, from Haifa. More arrests are anticipated.


Police discovered in the residences of the three suspects Judaica objects worth some $2 million. Some of the objects have already been identified and they include two silver pomegranates which belonged to the famed Montefiore family.

Reshet Bet's Adi Meir reports that the investigation began with the receiving of intelligence information concerning stolen property at a Tel aviv store. Detectives kept watch on the store and arrested a Benei Berak residence who showed up to pick up some articles. Later the Jerusalem resident was arrested, followed by the arrest of the man from Haifa, who was returning from Europe to the Ben Gurion airport.
